The Mighty Detail

Economics: The World Trade Organisation has increased its forecast for global trade growth this year from 0.9 per cent to 2.4 per cent. It has decreased its forecast for 2026, however, from 1.8 per cent to 0.5 per cent as the “global economy cools” and the impact of tariffs “is finally felt for a full year”.

Business and markets: The price of gold reached $4,000 per ounce for the first time yesterday. The price of gold has increased by over 50 per cent this year. It comes as investors look for protection against inflation and trade uncertainty from changing US tariffs.

Foreign Affairs: President Macron has asked his outgoing Prime Minister, Sébastien Lecornu, to put together a new cabinet by this evening.

  • Macron’s request has caused some confusion among lawmakers, however, because Lecornu resigned on Monday after failing to receive support for his proposed cabinet.

  • France is facing a debt crisis with a budget deficit of 5.8% of GDP and a hung parliament that does not want to cut spending.

Security and intelligence: Russia hosted Afghanistan’s Taliban government yesterday. Russia’s Foreign Secretary, Sergei Lavrov, praised the Taliban for combatting the Islamic State group and illegal drugs.

  • Lavrov also said there should not be any foreign military presence in Afghanistan.

  • In September, President Trump asked to re-take the Bagram Air Base in the country but the Taliban refused.

Domestic politics: The Conservative Party leader, Kemi Badenoch will give a keynote speech at the party’s conference in Manchester at 11.00am today. This week, the Party promised to enact the following key policies if it forms the next government:

  • Leave the European Convention on Human Rights

  • Repeal the Climate Change Act

  • Eliminate £47 billion from public spending, with £23 billion coming from welfare

✏️Life coaching quote of the day

“Putting things off is the biggest waste of life: it snatches away each day as it comes, and denies us the present by promising the future. The greatest obstacle to living is expectancy, which hangs upon tomorrow and loses today.” – Seneca, Ancient Roman philosopher

Mighty takeaway: Live for today, don’t wait for tomorrow.
