The Mighty Detail

Economics: Strikes at Rotterdam and Antwerp – Europe’s two largest ports – are adding to the significant shipping delays caused by Storm Amy.

  • Dutch lashers, who secure cargo to ships and handle 17,000 containers a day, are demanding a 7 per cent pay increase.

  • Harbour pilots at Antwerp are striking over pension reforms.

Business and markets: Netflix is putting video games on its TV platform for the first time as part of its new business strategy. The streaming company is seeking to diversify away from films and TV shows towards “social gaming experiences” with games such as Tetris and Pictionary. Netflix shares increased by 50 per cent in the first half of 2025.

Foreign Affairs: China says it has introduced new restrictions on rare earth exports for use in computer chips and in military applications.

  • The restrictions are likely be used as leverage in trade talks ahead of a meeting between President Xi and President Trump this month.

  • China is responsible for 61 per cent of rare earth production and 92 per cent of rare earth processing.

Security and intelligence: There are reports that Russia has wiped out around 60 per cent of Ukraine’s domestic gas production. It follows Russian strikes in Kharkiv and Poltava on the 3rd October. It means that Ukraine is likely to have to spend $2.2 billion on fuel imports this winter.

Domestic politics: The UK Government has announced £1.3 billion of new Indian investment in the UK following the UK Prime Minister’s trip to India this week. Three Bollywood films will also be made in the UK next year and there is a £350 million deal to send UK-made missiles to India.
