The Mighty Detail
Economics: Sanae Takaichi was elected as the leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party on Saturday and is set to be Japan’s first female Prime Minister. Takaichi is an advocate of “Abenomics” and will likely pursue looser fiscal and monetary policies – higher spending and cheaper borrowing.
Business and markets: Warren Buffett will pay $9.7 billion to acquire OxyChem, a chemical products manufacturer. The deal could be his last before he retires as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway in December. Buffett is sitting on a cash pile of around $340 billion and has struggled to find worthwhile investments.
Foreign Affairs: On Friday, the US conducted a strike on a vessel near Venezuela which it suspected of carry illegal drugs. The strike happened in international waters and killed four men.
US Defence Secretary, Pete Hegseth, said the people on the ship were “narco-terrorists”.
Drug raids are usually carried out by the US Coast Guard but the US is now deploying its military power in new ways.
Security and intelligence: Negotiators from the US, Israel and Hamas will meet in Cairo today to discuss plans for a ceasefire in Gaza. It comes after Hamas agreed to release all hostages, as per President Trump’s plan, but did not address proposals that it should demilitarise.
Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will attend from the US side.
Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer will attend from the Israeli side.
Domestic politics: The UK Government will make it simpler for the police to stop regular protests such as the pro-Palestine marches. The police will be able to consider the “cumulative” effect of protests rather than “one-off” effects. Pro-Palestine marches went ahead at the weekend despite the Government saying they should be paused to respect the Jewish community after the Manchester synagogue attack.
