The Mighty Detail
Economics: Traders have increased their predictions for a UK interest rate cut by Christmas. It comes after figures released yesterday showed that UK unemployment rose from 4.8 per cent to 5 per cent in Q3 2025. Wage growth in the private sector slowed to 4.2 per cent but rose to 6.6 per cent in the public sector.
Business and markets: UK investors took money out of stocks at a record pace in the four months to October. Around £7.3 billion was taken out of stocks, which is the largest outflow ever recorded.
One factor may include investors wishing to avoid potential increases in capital gains tax in the Budget.
Another factor could be people wishing to withdraw their tax-free lump sum from their pensions before it is potentially scaled back or scrapped in the Budget.
Foreign Affairs: The EU has determined that Spain, Italy, Greece and Cyprus are under “migratory pressure”. This means that other EU member states will either have to take asylum seekers into their own country, pay €20,000 for each asylum seeker they do not take, or provide financial support to Spain, Italy, Greece and Cyprus.
Security and intelligence: A United States naval taskforce, centred on the world’s largest warship, the USS Gerald R. Ford, has arrived in the Caribbean.
The US administration says the naval force, which includes thousands of personnel, will help to disrupt regional narcotics networks.
Venezuela says that the US is fabricating a war and is intent on regime change. In response, it has announced a nationwide military mobilisation.
Domestic politics: There are reports that the UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, could face a leadership challenge after the Budget. Some Labour MPs are reportedly concerned about the Party’s prospects in the lead-up to the local elections next May.
