The Mighty Detail

Economics: China’s exports fell by 1.1 per cent in October compared with a year before. This follows an 8.3 per cent increase in September. The country also recorded a 25 per cent drop in exports to the United States in October.

Business and markets: It is being reported that Lloyds Bank has become a significant residential landlord, with a £2 billion rental portfolio. Lloyds entered the residential landlord market in 2021 to diversify its revenue and has bought 7500 homes for rent in four years.

Foreign Affairs: The Philippines was hit by Typhoon Fung-wong on Sunday. The typhoon hit the archipelago with wind speeds of up to 143 miles per hour. Over a million people have been evacuated. It follows Typhoon Kalmaegi, which hit the country on Tuesday, and killed over 200 people.

Security and intelligence: The UK and the US have lifted their sanctions on Syria’s President Ahmed al-Sharaa after the UN Security Council did the same on Thursday last week.

  • It comes ahead of a meeting between al-Sharaa and President Trump today.

  • The UK and the EU lifted some economic sanctions on Syria as a whole in May but sanctions on arms remain in place.

UK domestic affairs: The Director General of the BBC, Tim Davie, and the BBC CEO of News, Deborah Turness, have resigned over a BBC documentary on Donald Trump. A leaked memo suggest that BBC Panorama pieced together bits of Trump’s speech in 2021 to make it look as if he explicitly encouraged the Capitol Hill riots.
