The Mighty Detail

Economics: The OPEC+ group of oil producing nations has agreed to raise production targets in July by 188,000 barrels a day. Given the difficulties associated with moving oil through the Strait of Hormuz, the small increase is largely theoretical in nature.

Business and markets: Ingredion, the US-based food company, is set to announce its takeover of Tate & Lyle. The deal, which would take Tate & Lyle private and off the UK stock market, would value the sugar company at around £2.7 billion.

Foreign Affairs: There are reports that the US is considering purchasing the Chagos Islands from Mauritius. The UK had previously agreed to give the islands to Mauritius but this deal is currently on hold given US opposition to the plan.

  • Diego Garcia, the largest island, is home to UK and US defence installations.

Security and intelligence: Ukraine’s President Zelensky met with Prime Minister Starmer, President Macron and Chancellor Merz in London yesterday evening.

Domestic politics: The UK Government has said it will set up a new organisation – the Early Career Jobs Alliance – with £20 million of funding to support young people into work. The Alliance will initially look at how entry-level employment is changing and “produce practical help for businesses on how to redesign roles while maintaining entry-level pathways”.

✏️Life coaching quote of the day

“To a large degree, the measure of our peace of mind is determined by how much we are able to live in the present moment. Irrespective of what happened yesterday or last year, and what may or may not happen tomorrow, the present moment is where you are—always!” – Richard Carlson, psychotherapist and writer
