The Mighty Detail
Economics: The European Central Bank will announce its interest rate decision tomorrow. The ECB is expected to raise rates as the Iran War increases energy costs and risks increasing inflation.
The main interest rate currently stands at 2 per cent.
Business: British pharmaceutical giant GSK is to buy the American biotech company Nuvalent, in a $10.6 billion deal. Nuvalent designs treatments for lung cancer. GSK is paying a large premium for Nuvalent, which has a market cap of around $7 billion.
There have been suggestions that GSK’s purchase could replace some of its lost income from HIV drug dolutegravir, whose patent is soon to expire.
Markets: OpenAI has submitted its initial paperwork to list on the stock market. The initial public offering could take place as early as the autumn. OpenAI, which was founded in 2015, is worth around $852 billion.
Foreign Affairs: The Chinese Government is planning to spend $295 billion (2 trillion yuan) over the next five years on building data centres. The data centres will support the country’s deployment of AI.
Security and intelligence: The Pentagon has added three significant Chinese companies to a list of firms it claims are supporting the Chinese military. The US Defense Department added carmaker BYD, online retailer Alibaba, and internet search engine Baidu to its 1260H List of “Chinese military companies”. The full list is available here.
Domestic politics: There was disorder in Belfast last night after protestors gathered in the city. It follows a knife attack in the city by a 30-year-old Sudanese man on Monday evening. The man has been charged with attempted murder by the police.
