The Mighty Detail
Economics: New data suggests that the number of UK workers facing redundancy is at its highest level since August 2020. Over 37,000 potential redundancies were filed in the month leading up to the 24th May with the UK Insolvency Service. The figure is up by 62 per cent since last year.
Business and markets: Shares in AI chipmaker Broadcom fell by 12 per cent yesterday after its revenue forecast fell short of analysts’ expectations. Analysts were forecasting revenue of $17.2 billion in Q3 2026 but Broadcom is now predicting revenue of just $16 billion. It comes as Broadcom’s main customer, Google, branches out to other suppliers.
Shares of other AI chipmakers also fell in a broader tech rout, with Micron sinking by 8 per cent and Arm Holdings by 4 per cent.
Foreign Affairs: The final round of Peru’s Presidential election takes place on Sunday. The leading candidate is Keiko Fujimori, a conservative senator and daughter of Peru’s authoritarian former President Alberto Fujimori. She faces the left-wing candidate Roberto Sanchez.
This is Keiko Fujimori’s fourth run for the Presidency.
Security and intelligence: Poland and Lithuania are in talks to play a larger role in NATO’s nuclear defences. Poland has ruled outed hosting nuclear weapons but there have been suggestions that Poland and the Baltic countries could host bases for US aircraft capable of carrying conventional and nuclear weapons.
Domestic politics: The Electoral Commission has announced donations received by political parties between January and March 2026. Reform UK received the most donations at just under £10 million. The Conservative Party received the second most donations at just over £6 million and the Labour Party received the third most at just over £4 million.
