The Mighty Detail

Economics: European Commissioners are meeting in Brussels today to discuss the EU’s relationship with China. They are expected to discuss measures to protect EU industries from Chinese competition. France is leading the campaign. Other countries, such as Spain and Germany, oppose the plans.

Business: Anthropic, the company behind the AI tool “Claude” and competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, raised $65 billion of investment yesterday. The fund raising round was based on a $965 billion valuation of the firm.

Markets: Shares in chipmakers SK Hynix (a South Korean company) and Micron (a US company) have risen by 10 per cent and 12 per cent respectively since the start of the week.

Foreign Affairs: The Israel Defence Force (IDF) hit a target in Beirut, Lebanon yesterday. The IDF was reportedly targeting the head of an Iranian militia connected to Hezbollah. The IDF said on Tuesday that it would be expanding its operations beyond Israel’s border region with Lebanon in order to protect Israeli citizens.

Security and intelligence: Germany and the Netherlands are to establish a new joint tactical military headquarters in the Baltics. According to the German Defence Ministry, the joint command centre in the region of Estonia and Latvia will strengthen “the cohesion of NATO” and support the “deterrence of Russia”.

  • The command centre can lead up to 50,000 troops.

Domestic politics: The Prime Minister has described the Government-commissioned report into the number of young people aged 16 to 24 who are not in education, employment or training as “sobering”.

  • The number of so-called “neets” now stands at over one million and is reported to cost the UK £3.2 billion a year in welfare spending.
