The Mighty Detail
Economics: A new report suggests that eastern Germany is continuing to fall behind economically, particularly in relation to western Germany and former Communist neighbours such as Poland. Median household wealth in eastern Germany in 2023 was €35,900 compared to €143,200 in western Germany.
Business: Three of the largest consultancy firms in the UK (Bain & Co, Alvarez & Marsal, and Boston Consultancy Group) are to increase their number of junior hires. Despite concerns about AI replacing entry-level roles, Bain & Co suggested that juniors were needed “working alongside more senior experts” to develop their knowledge and judgment.
Markets: Universal Music has rejected a €55.75 billion takeover bid from Pershing Square Capital. Pershing’s bid would have valued the Amsterdam-listed company at €30.40 a share. Universal, the world’s largest record company, said that the bid undervalued the company.
Foreign Affairs: Turkey’s ousted opposition leader, Ozgur Ozel, held a significant rally in Ankara on Saturday. The crowd was estimated to be in the tens of thousands. Ozel was ousted from his leadership position by a court ruling last week.
Ozel claims the court case was brought by the Turkish Government to prevent him from standing against President Erdogan. The Government rejects this claim.
Security and intelligence: The Swedish and Finnish intelligence agencies have followed the UK in publicly stating that Russia is becoming increasingly determined to steal Western technology.
Sweden said that Russia was putting “serious effort” into stealing machinery, and dual-use civilian and military technology.
The Director of Finland’s intelligence service said that Russia was seeking to steal space technology, quantum, arctic and marine technology.
The poor state of the Russian economy and lack of progress in the Ukraine war are reported to be factors in Russia’s more aggressive attitude.
Domestic politics: The UK’s largest railway franchise, Govia Thameslink Railway, was nationalised yesterday. It forms part of the Government plans to bring all rail services in the UK under public ownership. Chiltern Railways and Great Western Railways will be nationalised later this year.
