The Mighty Detail

Economics: US inflation rose by 2.9 per cent in August compared to a year earlier. This figure is the biggest increase since January. The US Federal Reserve meets next week to set interest rates and is expected to be cautious over the extent of cuts as it balances rising unemployment with higher inflation.

Business and markets: Klarna shares increased by 15 per cent in their opening day of trading at the New York Stock Exchange yesterday. A share is worth $45.82.

  • The Swedish Buy-Now-Pay-Later company started in 2005.

  • Its CEO said it decided to list in the US because it was the “largest consumer market” and the “biggest credit card market” in the world.

Foreign Affairs: Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro has been convicted of an attempted coup by the country’s Supreme Court. Bolsonaro may now face prison. A full debate on his sentence is set to take place today.

Security and intelligence: There will be an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council next Wednesday. The meeting has been called at Poland’s request and comes after Russian drones entered Polish airspace this week.

  • Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine say that Russia’s incursion was deliberate.

  • NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, Alexus Grynkewich, said yesterday, however, that it was not yet clear if it was deliberate.

Domestic politics: The Education Secretary, Bridget Philipson, and former Leader of the House of Commons, Lucy Powell, have reached the next stage of the Labour Party’s Deputy Leader election.

  • Each candidate now needs to secure the support of 5 per cent of local parties, or of three Labour-affiliated groups (such as trade unions), to go through to the members’ ballot.

✏️Life coaching quote of the day

“Learn to enjoy every minute of your life. Be happy now. Don't wait for something outside of yourself to make you happy in the future. Think how really precious is the time you have to spend, whether it's at work or with your family. Every minute should be enjoyed and savoured.” – Earl Nightingale, motivational speaker

Mighty takeaway: Don’t waste your days away with useless pre-occupations. Find time each day to do the things that make you happy.

That’s it for this morning and for this week. Thanks for reading and we hope you have a good weekend.

Bye!
