The Mighty Detail
Economics: China is launching an anti-dumping investigation into US semiconductors. It comes after the US added 23 Chinese companies to a list of businesses that will face restrictions for reportedly acting against US national security interests.
This week China and US officials will also meet in Spain to discuss trade, national security and the ownership of TikTok.
Business and markets: Sainsbury’s has ended talks to sell Argos to the Chinese company JD.com. It said a sale to JD.com would no longer be in the best interest of shareholders and staff. It comes only a day after Sainsbury’s confirmed that talks were taking place.
Sainsbury’s bought Argos for £1.1 billion in 2016.
Argos is the UK’s second largest general merchandise retailer.
Foreign Affairs: President Trump has said that he is prepared to impose further sanctions on Russia if and when NATO countries stop buying Russian oil. European countries have spent around €210 billion on Russian oil and gas since the start of the Ukraine war in 2022.
Security and intelligence: Romania summoned the Russian ambassador yesterday after a Russian drone entered the country’s airspace on Saturday. Romania scrambled two F-16 fighter jets in response to the drone’s incursion. Russia has not commented on the incident.
Domestic politics: The UK Government has announced that US companies will invest £1.25 billion in the UK financial services sector. The news has been released ahead of President Trump’s state visit to the UK from Tuesday to Thursday this week.
