The Mighty Detail

Economics: The Bank of England has said that it is looking to loosen banks’ capital requirements. The plan could support lending in the UK but some members of the Bank’s Financial Policy Committee are concerned that the move could also increase financial stability risks.

  • Some of the current capital requirement rules were introduced after the Global Financial Crisis in 2008 to protect customers.

Business and markets: Amazon is seeking to raise around $25 billion in its last corporate bond sale this year. Amazon has already achieved $64 billion in bond sales in the US, Canada and Europe this year. Some of the funds are expected to support the company’s investment in AI.

Foreign Affairs: The Paris Court of Appeal upheld the ruling yesterday that Marine Le Pen and 10 co-defendants were guilty of misappropriating European Parliament funds. The judge also confirmed a €100,000 fine for Le Pen along with three years of prison (two years suspended and one year with an electronic tag).

  • With time already served, Le Pen is free to run for French Presidency for the Rassemblement National in April 2027 which she confirmed she would do yesterday evening.

Security and intelligence: At the start of the NATO leaders’ summit yesterday, member states announced $50 billion of deals for new military equipment. President Trump also announced that he would consider selling US F-35 fighter jets to Turkey – long desired by Turkey but prevented under US law because Turkey possesses Russian-made air defence systems.

Domestic politics: The UK Office for Budget Responsibility has said that the UK Government would need to raise taxes and cut spending by £101.4 billion in order to keep the UK national debt stable at 95 per cent of GDP.

  • It has suggested changes to pensions and welfare payments, bringing more people into the 40 per cent (higher rate) income tax bracket, and improving productivity in the NHS and economy to stabilise public debt.

*Reform UK special update: Reform UK leader, Nigel Farage, announced that he would stand down as an MP and fight a by-election in his seat following ongoing investigations into his financial interests. The main political parties have said they will not contest the seat and effectively accused Nigel Farage of political gameplaying.*

✏️Life coaching quote of the day

“When obstacles arise, you change your direction to reach your goal; you do not change your decision to get there.” – Zig Ziglar, motivational speaker

Mighty takeaway: Keep obstacles in perspective. If you are confident in your ability to reach your goal (and you should be because you were motivated to set the goal in the first place), keep on doing the work to get there.

That’s it for this Wednesday morning. Thank you for reading!

Cheerio!
