The Mighty Detail
Economics: The OECD and the Bank of England have both warned about inflation in the UK.
The OECD forecasts that inflation in the UK will be 3.5 per cent in 2025 – the highest in the G7.
The Bank of England’s Chief Economist said that higher taxes, changes to immigration, Brexit and worklessness could lead to “more lasting” inflation in the UK. He also added, however, that he was more comfortable about inflation now than earlier in the year.
Business and markets: Shares in Nvidia fell by 3 per cent a day after the company announced a $100 billion investment deal with OpenAI. It is being reported that investors are concerned about a dot-com style bubble and whether there will be enough energy in the future to power the AI ambitions of the two companies.
Foreign Affairs: There were nationwide protests in Slovakia yesterday against the Government’s pro-Russia stance and budget proposals designed to tackle the country high budget deficit.
Proposed budget measures include higher taxes and higher VAT on some food.
It follows similar large-scale protests in the country last week.
Security and intelligence: President Trump has said that NATO members should shoot down Russian military aircraft which enters their airspace. The US Secretary of State made a similar statement earlier in the day. It follows two weeks of Russian incursions into eastern Europe by drones and airplanes.
Domestic politics: The UK Liberal Democrat Party has dropped its flagship Net Zero policy which would have seen the UK reach Net Zero by 2045. It has now aligned itself with the Labour Government’s 2050 target.
