The Mighty Detail

Economics: The UK Chancellor said yesterday that she would take action in November’s Budget to cut household bills and control public spending. The measures could also help bring down interest rates.

  • Data released today, however, is due to show inflation increasing to 4 per cent in September. This could make a cut in interest rates from the Bank of England less likely.

Business and markets: Shares in General Motors rose by over 14 per cent yesterday and recorded their best performance since 2020.

In Q3, the vehicle manufacturer posted revenue of $48.9 billion and earnings per share of $2.80. Revenue is down on Q3 2024 but is better than had been predicted by analysts.

Foreign Affairs: Shipments of Russian crude oil have risen to a 29-month high. Over the last four weeks, crude from Russian ports reached 3.82 million barrels a day. This is the highest level since May 2023.

  • The gross value of the country’s crude exports reached $1.5 billion.

  • China and India remain significant buyers of Russian crude in Asia, with Turkey a significant buyer in Europe.

Security and intelligence: European leaders have signed a statement supporting a ceasefire in Ukraine at the current line of contact, with a view to further negotiation. It contrasts with a statement made by President Trump last week, in which he suggested ending the war at the line of contact to “let both [Ukraine and Russia] claim victory.”

Domestic politics: The UK Government is in talks with Kosovo which would see the country host unsuccessful migrants to the UK. In return for hosting the “migrant return hub”, Kosovo is likely to seek greater security cooperation from the UK to protect it from Russian and Serbian security threats.

✏️Life coaching quote of the day

Mighty takeaway: Take risks in life and have the courage to make yourself happy.

That’s it for this Wednesday morning. See you on Friday!
