The Mighty Detail

Economics: The price of oil rose by 5.6 per cent yesterday to $62 per barrel. It comes after the US administration imposed sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil on Wednesday.

Business and markets: Airbus, Thales and Leonardo will merge their space and satellite activities in an effort to produce a European rival to Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite programme.

  • Starlink launched its 10,000th satellite this week and plays a major role in supporting Ukraine’s war effort.

  • The combined operation of the three European defence giants is expected to employ 25,000 people.

Foreign Affairs: EU leaders have failed to reach agreement on a €140 billion reparation loan for Ukraine. The loan would use frozen Russian assets but has been met with resistance by Belgium. Belgium, which hosts many of the frozen assets, is seeking financial protections against a possible retaliation by Russia.

Security and intelligence: The Metropolitan Police have arrested three people suspected of assisting Russia’s intelligence service. The men are aged 48, 45 and 44 and were arrested at locations in west and central London yesterday. The police have said that the number of proxies recruited by foreign spy agencies is increasing.

Domestic politics: Resident doctors in England will go on strike next month over pay and career progression. The strike will start at 7.00am on the 14th November and end at 7.00am on the 19th November.
