The Mighty Detail
Economics: France’s government is likely to collapse today in a no-confidence vote. It follows lawmakers’ unhappiness about plans to reduce the national debt.
France has the highest national debt in Europe at around €3.35 trillion.
After Greece and Italy, France also has the debt-to-GDP ratio in the EU, with debt standing at 114 per cent of GDP.
Business and markets: The EU has fined Google €2.95 billion for anticompetitive advertising technology practices. The EU states that Google has favoured its own services, which has harmed publishers and advertisers. President Trump has threatened to retaliate against the decision which he called “very unfair”.
Foreign Affairs: The Prime Minister of Japan, Shigeru Ishiba, has resigned. Ishiba’s Liberal Democrat Party (LDP) had been due to decide about whether to have an internal leadership vote today that could have pushed him out. Under Ishiba, the LDP lost its majorities in the both the lower and upper houses of Parliament.
Security and intelligence: President Putin has said that he would consider any Western troops sent to Ukraine before the end of the fighting as “legitimate targets”. He also added that it would be “practically impossible” to reach a deal with Ukraine and sees no need for Western troops in Ukraine after fighting stops. President Trump said yesterday he was ready to move to a second phase of sanctions against Russia.
Domestic politics: The new UK Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, will host a meeting this week with the Five Eyes intelligence group on border security and people smuggling.
Mahmood was appointed as the new UK Home Secretary on Friday.
She is considered to be less cautious than her predecessor Yvette Cooper.
Mahmood has cited Margaret Thatcher as a political hero.
