The Mighty Detail
Economics: The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, will give her keynote speech at the Labour Party conference today.
Despite pressure from some in her party, Reeves recently spoke out against borrowing more money.
She said the Government was already spending more on debt interest than on the Ministry of Defence, the Home Office and the Ministry of Justice combined.
Business and markets: Videogame maker, Electronic Arts (EA), is set to go private and be taken off the stock market in a $50 billion private equity deal. Investors include Silver Lake, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, and Affinity Partners – run by President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. The deal will be the largest leverage buyout in history.
Foreign Affairs: President Trump will meet four congressional leaders today to try to avert a government shut down at midnight tomorrow.
The federal government will shut down if a spending package is not agreed for the coming year.
Although it has a majority in congress, the US government needs at least seven Democratic Senators to vote for its spending package.
Security and intelligence: The UN Security Council has voted to reinstate sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme. A resolution put forward by China and Russia to delay the sanctions was rejected. The sanctions include a ban on uranium enrichment and an arms embargo.
Domestic politics: The UK Prime Minister said that the policies of Reform UK, which is leading the opinion polls, are “racist” and “immoral”. The Prime Minister was referring to Reform’s policy proposal of getting rid of indefinite leave to remain for migrants. Reform also says it will get rid of dual citizenship for migrants and ban benefits for non-UK citizens.
