The Mighty Detail
Economics: Russia’s central bank has lowered its GDP growth forecast for the country this year to a range of between 0 per cent and 1 per cent. Inflation is forecast to be between 6 per cent and 7 per cent, which it says is a result of an increase in fuel prices.
Business and markets: President Trump has threatened to impose “substantial” tariffs on the EU on top of the global 10 per cent tariffs announced on Friday.
It comes after the EU last week imposed a $1 billion fine on Google over anti-competitive practices.
President Trump said that the EU was “robbing” American companies.
Foreign Affairs: The German Government has said that Saturday’s incident, in which a van was driven into a Pride event in Berlin, is being treated as an “Islamist terrorist attack”. One was person was killed in the attack and 29 people were injured. The suspected attacker was killed by police yesterday.
Security and intelligence: The military governments of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso have said that they will triple their number of joint troops in the fight against Islamist attacks. The troops in the Alliance of Sahel States will increase from around 5,000 to 15,000.
The three countries have cut security ties with the West in recent years in favour of Russian support but there is international concern that the region is increasingly incubating Islamist terrorism.
Domestic politics: The UK Prime Minister, Andy Burnham has given his first sit-down interview with the BBC since becoming Prime Minister. Burnham stated that he would defend the UK national interest against the US, dismissed proposals for an early General Election and said that the Government was still working out how to increase defence spending to 3 per cent of GDP.
The full interview is broadcast this evening on BBC One at 8.00pm.
