The Mighty Detail
Economics: The Eurozone grew by 0.2 per cent in Q3 2025, while unemployment remained at 6.3 per cent in September.
Across the EU as a whole, Sweden’s GDP grew the most at 1.1 per cent.
Lithuania’s economy performed the worst and it contracted by 0.2 per cent.
Business and markets: Jaguar Land Rover states that it lost nearly £500 million between July and September when a cyber attack forced it to stop vehicle production. In the same period last year, the company made a profit of £398 million. Around 5,000 other organisations are also said to have been affected as a result of the cyber attack.
Foreign Affairs: China has warned Japan that it risks a “crushing” military defeat should it “dare to interfere” over Taiwan.
It comes after Japan’s new Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, said that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could threaten Japan and lead to a Japanese military response.
As tensions increase, Tokyo also summoned the Chinese ambassador after a senior Chinese diplomat wrote a now-deleted post on X which appeared to threaten the Japanese Prime Minister.
Security and intelligence: The Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, has said that an incident yesterday in which a section of railway was removed from a train line to Warsaw may have been sabotage. A passenger train was forced to make an emergency stop. It follows another possible sabotage incident on the Polish railways in southern Poland last month.
Domestic politics: The UK Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, will give a speech in the House of Commons today on potential changes to the Government’s asylum policy. In proposals widely trailed yesterday, Mahmood said that asylum seekers would have to wait 20 years before they could apply to settle permanently in the UK.
