The Mighty Detail
Economics: Yields on 30-year UK government bonds reached 5.78 per cent, yesterday – their highest level since 1998. Investors are reportedly concerned about the potential leadership challenge to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, following local election results on Thursday, and the impact this could have on an already weak UK economy.
Business and markets: Shares in Intel increased by nearly 12 per cent during trading yesterday. It follows news that Apple is in discussions with Intel and Samsung to produce computer chips in the US.
Intel shares have increased by 330 per cent since August 2025 when the US Government bought a stake in the company. Intel shares rose by 114 per cent last month – Intel’s best month in 55 years.
Foreign Affairs: The Romanian Government has collapsed after the Parliament passed a no-confidence vote in Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. The vote was initiated by the Social Democrats and the far-right AUR Party, who are unhappy with the Government’s austerity measures.
Bolojan’s Government came into office last June facing the largest budget deficit in Europe (9.3 per cent of GDP) and has implemented spending cuts.
Security and intelligence: Japan and the Philippines have agreed to begin security talks which could see Japan offer used warships to the Philippines. Both countries have expressed concerns about China’s territorial claims around their waters.
The US, Japan, Canada and the Philippines will separately take part in annual naval exercises close to the Philippines today.
Domestic politics: The UK Government announced a number of measures yesterday to tackle antisemitism in the UK and has also indicated that Iran could be behind some recent incidents. The police investigated a new arson attack on a synagogue in Whitechapel yesterday.
