The Mighty Detail
Economics: In a wide ranging interview, President Trump has warned that the EU could face tariffs of 35 per cent if it does invest $600 million in the US by the end of his second term. Trump separately stated that Russia’s economy “stinks” and that pressure on Russian oil prices will help to end the war in Ukraine.
Business and markets: UK investors have taken £50 billion out of UK shares since 2020 and invested over £25 billion in foreign shares. The data from investment bank Panmure Liberum suggests that this could be a reason behind the recent underperformance of the UK market.
Foreign Affairs: When it meets tomorrow, Israel’s security cabinet is to discuss a plan to occupy all of Gaza. Speaking earlier in the week, Prime Minister Netanyahu said that Israel would continue with its three war aims: “the defeat of the enemy, the release of our hostages, and the assurance that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel.”
Security and intelligence: Taiwanese authorities have arrested six people on suspicion of stealing trade secrets from the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and breaching national security. TSMC is the world’s most advanced manufacturer of semiconductors and provides chips to Nvidia and Apple.
Domestic politics: The UK Conservative Party Leader, Kemi Badenoch, has accused the Government of “rubber-stamping” asylum applications. It comes after the Government said that it would introduce a fast-track scheme for the processing of asylum applications.
