The Mighty Detail

Economics: The CEO of JP Morgan issued a warning yesterday about ongoing risks to economic stability which the markets “seem to underappreciate”. Jamie Dimon cited risks from geopolitics, sticky inflation and high asset prices. JP Morgan accordingly increased its provisions for bad loans to $4.7 billion in Q4 2025.

Business and markets: Shares in a number of credit card companies and banks have fallen this week after President Trump said on Friday that he would limit credit card interest to 10 per cent.

  • Shares in Mastercard and Visa have fallen by 6 per cent since Friday.

  • The average credit card interest rate is around 21 per cent according to the US Federal Reserve.

Foreign Affairs: Japan’s Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, will tell her party today that she will call a snap General Election. Takaichi, who became Prime Minister in October, has approval ratings of 70 per cent and is known for her pro-stimulus economic policies and her hawkish stance towards China.

Security and intelligence: Greenland and Denmark’s Foreign Ministers will meet US Vice President JD Vance in Washington DC today to discuss Greenland. At a joint press conference with the Danish Prime Minister yesterday, the Greenland Prime Minister said “if we have to choose between the US and Denmark here and now, we choose Denmark”.

Domestic politics: The UK Government will announce plans for a new railway line between Birmingham and Manchester today. There will also be upgrades to lines in Yorkshire and a new line between Manchester and Liverpool. The projects are not expected to be delivered until the mid to late 2030s.
