The Mighty Detail
Economics: Barclays bank strategists are warning that the US Treasuries market may need occasional bailouts. According to a report, the $31 trillion US Government debt market has grown by nearly 9 per cent since 2009, while bank capital has only grown by 3.8 per cent a year since 2010 on average. This is creating a mismatch between supply and demand and structural instability.
Business and markets: The Nasdaq rose by nearly 4 per cent yesterday following President Trump’s remarks to aides that he could end the war sooner (without fully re-opening the Strait of Hormuz).
Bucking the market trend, Microsoft finished its worst quarter since 2008 yesterday. Its stock has lost nearly a quarter of its value since January on AI concerns.
Foreign Affairs: Rafael López Aliaga is neck and neck in the polls to become Peru’s next President. The businessman and former Lima mayor is one of Peru’s richest men (he claims to be worth over $1 billion).
Some of his notable policies include introducing the death penalty for certain crimes, expelling Venezuelan migrants and dramatically cutting the public sector.
His lead rival is Keiko Fujimori, daughter of Peru’s former president, Alberto Fujimori.
Security and intelligence: Russia’s security agency, the FSB, is gaining new powers. A new law today will allow the FSB to access companies’ databases on demand (including those of foreign companies operating in Russia).
In February, Russia passed a law which allows the regulator to suspend telephone and internet networks (as happened in Moscow and St Petersburg last month).
Domestic politics: UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, met Syria’s President Ahmed al-Sharaa yesterday in London. The official readout states that the two men discussed the conflict in Iran and possible opportunities for UK businesses in Syria’s economic regeneration.
