The Mighty Detail
Economics: President Macron has warned that the EU may impose new tariffs on China because of China’s trade surplus with the bloc. Macron said he gave the same warning to Chinese officials during his state visit to China last week. The EU’s trade deficit with China is around €300 billion.
Business and markets: Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has said it is partnering with news organisations to bring up-to-date information to its artificial intelligence services. The news organisations include CNN, Le Monde Group and Fox News.
Foreign Affairs: The Japanese Government has accused the Chinese military of twice locking radar onto Japanese military planes in international waters on Saturday. The Chinese navy said that the Japanese planes were threatening Chinese airspace and flight training activities.
Security and intelligence: The US has published a new national security strategy. The strategy states that Europe is facing “civilisational decline” because of migration, censorship of free speech and political suppression.
It also says that there are “unrealistic expectations” of Russia defeating Ukraine and blames the EU for hindering US efforts to end the war.
Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said that the strategy was “largely consistent with our vision”.
Domestic politics: The UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, has said that Angela Rayner will make a return to the Cabinet. In an interview with the Observer published yesterday, Sir Keir said that Rayner was “hugely talented”. Rayner, the former Deputy Prime Minister, resigned in September over a tax scandal.
