The Mighty Detail
Economics: The Bank for International Settlements has published a report warning about the risks to the global economy. It cites inflation, increasing public debt, uncertainty linked to the current AI investment boom, and fragile government bond markets.
The full report is available here: https://www.bis.org/publ/arpdf/ar2026e.htm
Business and markets: The US Government has given Anthropic permission to restore access to its Mythos 5 AI model to some “trusted partners”. Earlier this month, the US Government had banned foreign access to Mythos 5 over concerns that it could be used to harm national security.
Foreign Affairs: Iran launched strikes at Bahrain and Kuwait yesterday, after the US and Iran traded blows over the weekend. Under an agreement signed earlier this month, Iran and the US have 60 days to finalise a peace deal.
Security and intelligence: The Chinese leadership removed a number of senior figures from the National People’s Congress on Friday. General Xu Xueqiang (head of military equipment development), and five other military leaders were removed. One of the country’s top scientist, Ma Xingrui, has also been removed.
The Chinese Government has previously cited corruption for removals but others have said that the Chinese leadership may be seeking to remove potential rivals.
Domestic politics: Andy Burnham is expected to set out some economic plans for Government today. It is being reported that he will propose devolving more powers to regional mayors over social housing, welfare and education.
