The Mighty Detail
Economics: President Trump has threatened 100 per cent tariffs on all Canadian exports to the US if it makes a trade deal with China. Trump said that “China will eat Canada alive” in a trade deal and destroy their “businesses, social fabric, and general way of life”.
Business and markets: The Japanese Government may intervene to stop further depreciation of the yen. It comes after trading on Friday saw the yen climb by 1.75 per cent against the dollar to ¥155.63, following concerns about public spending in the country.
The US Federal Reserve may also intervene to support the yen – only the fourth time it would have intervened in the currency markets since 1996.
Foreign Affairs: France’s President Macron has said that he wants a social media ban for children under the age of 15 to be in force by September 2026. It comes after Australia introduced a ban for children under the age of 16 last year and after the UK said it would consider a ban.
Security and intelligence: The Chinese Government is investigating the country’s top generals, Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli, for alleged corruption. It comes amid a broader purge of the Central Military Commission, China’s foremost military body.
Since 2023, five of the seven people in the Central Military Commission have been removed, leaving only President Xi and one other individual.
A Pentagon paper available here suggests that the purges may be raising questions about military readiness among China’s military leadership.
Domestic politics: The Prime Minister, Chancellor, and business leaders will visit China on Wednesday in a bid to strengthen economic ties. The visit is a significant shift from the more hostile approach to China taken by Prime Ministers Johnson, Truss and Sunak.
Discussions will focus on financial services and visa-free travel to China for UK citizens.
