The Mighty Detail
Economics: China’s Premier, Li Qiang, defended his country’s recent curbs on rare earth exports at the G20 yesterday. He cited the need to restrict exports for military uses.
China also unveiled a new global initiative yesterday to help developing countries involved in mining.
Business and markets: BHP, the world’s largest mining company, has abandoned a second bid to buy London-listed Anglo American. It comes a little less than three weeks before Anglo American shareholders are due to vote in a merger in with the Canadian miner Teck.
Foreign Affairs: The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, said yesterday that changes would be made to the Russia-Ukraine peace plan so that Ukraine would be comfortable with it. European negotiators have pushed back on the US’s proposed territorial concessions, and want different wording on the future size of Ukraine’s armed forces and possible NATO membership for Ukraine.
Security and intelligence: Israel has killed Hezbollah’s Chief of Staff after an air strike in Lebanon. The Iranian-backed terrorist group confirmed the death and said that Israel had crossed a “red line”. Israel says that Hezbollah is rebuilding its military capabilities following a ceasefire in November 2024.
Domestic politics: The UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, is set to give approval to a controversial new Chinese embassy on the site of the former Royal Mint.
The Security Services are not thought to be raising objections as long as there are national security “mitigations”.
The proposed embassy is sited above important fibre optic cables in the City of London.
