The Mighty Detail
Economics: The US Federal Reserve and Bank of England are expected to hold interest rates this week, given inflation uncertainties from the Iran War. The Fed will announce its decision on Wednesday and is set to keep the current interest rate range of 3.5 per cent to 3.75 per cent. The Bank of England will announce its decision on Thursday and keep the rate at 3.75 per cent.
New US Fed Chairman, Kevin Warsh, will give his first press conference on Wednesday.
Business and markets: On Friday afternoon, the US Government ordered AI firm Anthropic to stop all foreign access to its Mythos 5 and Fable 5 AI models over national security concerns. There are reports that hackers were capable of “jailbreaking”, which means breaking into the AI models and carrying out restricted activities.
Foreign Affairs: The G7 Summit begins in Évian-les-Bains, France today. President Macron will greet President Trump this evening, which will be followed by a working dinner.
A meeting of G7 leaders takes place tomorrow, and there will be a session with President Zelensky.
On Wednesday, there will be a meeting on AI with the CEOs of OpenAI, Google DeepMind and Anthropic. On Wednesday evening, President Macron will host President Trump for dinner at the Palace of Versailles to mark the 250th anniversary of US independence.
Security and intelligence: North Korea’s foreign ministry said yesterday that its position to become a nuclear weapons state was “irreversible” and follows US-South Korean talks on North Korea’s nuclear weapons programme last week.
Domestic politics: The UK Government will today announce a ban on social media for children under the age of 16. Older children, up to the age of 18, will also face restrictions on “scrolling” at night after 8.30pm.
