The Mighty Detail

Economics: Japan’s trade minister, Ryosei Akazawa, has said that the Bank of Japan could increase interest rates in order to increase the value of the yen. This could in turn offset higher oil costs and curb rising prices for consumers.

Business and markets: The key stock market indices posted a weekly gain on Friday, following the ceasefire agreed between the US and Iran. The S&P rose by 3.6 per cent and the Nasdaq by 4.7 per cent.

  • The US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, however, is likely to put pressure on the markets this week.

  • Brent crude futures were trading at around $94 a barrel on Friday.

Foreign Affairs: Hungary’s opposition leader, Peter Magyar, won yesterday’s national election. The turnout was a record 77.8 per cent. The result marks the end of Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s 16-year rule in Hungary. Who is Peter Magyar and what are his policies?

1.   Re-adjusting relations with the European Union

2.   Shortening the terms of Orban allies, including the president, judges and the head of regulatory bodies

3.   Improving healthcare and education

Security and intelligence: President Trump has said that the US will block the Strait of Hormuz after US negotiations with Iran broke down at the weekend. According to the US, Iran was unwilling in the negotiations to abandon its nuclear programme. The US blockade will prevent Iran from exporting its oil and the US will start destroying mines in the Strait.

Domestic politics: The UK Government has approved an additional £1 million of funding to explore the potential re-introduction of the Golden Eagle back to the UK. The last eagle died in the Lake District in 2016.
