The Mighty Detail

Economics: US inflation is set to rise as the effect of higher tariffs starts to feed through into the broader economy. CPI inflation in the US is expected to come to 0.3 per cent in July. This is up from the 0.2 per cent recorded in June.

Business and markets: The AI industry is creating billionaires at an unprecedented pace. There are now 498 AI “unicorn” companies – private enterprises valued at $1 billion or more. Of these, 100 have been started since 2023. Bloomberg reported in March that the four largest AI companies had created 15 billionaires between them.

Foreign Affairs: At an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council yesterday, countries broadly condemned Israel’s plan to occupy Gaza. The US ambassador, Dorothy Shea, said however that Israel had accepted three ceasefire agreements which Hamas had rejected.

Security and intelligence: The Iranian judiciary said at the weekend that 20 people had been arrested in recent months for allegedly spying for Israel. It said that it would show them “no leniency”. Iran is increasing the number of executions of people convicted for spying, with at least eight people killed so far this year.

Domestic politics: Tesla has applied to the UK energy regulator, Ofgem, to supply electricity in the UK. It is expected that Tesla would supply owners of Tesla cars and batteries. Tesla already supplies energy to consumers in the US.
