The Mighty Detail

Economics: The Bank of England held interest rates steady at 4 per cent yesterday. It comes after inflation stood at 3.8 per cent in August – almost double the target – and followed five rounds of interest cuts since summer 2024.

Business and markets: AI chipmaker Nvidia is to invest $5 billion in its rival Intel. It comes after the US Government took a 10 per cent stake in Intel last month. Intel will help Nvidia makes chips in the US rather than overseas.

  • Intel shares rose by nearly 25 per cent following the news.

  • Nvidia is the world’s most valuable company and is worth over $4 trillion.

Foreign Affairs: Workers broke through a final piece of rock yesterday creating a new tunnel 4,600 feet beneath the Alps. The Brenner Base Tunnel between Italy and Austria will facilitate a new high-speed railway connecting northern and southern Europe. It is set to open in 2032, although the project is currently 16 years behind schedule.

Security and intelligence: The Metropolitan Police arrested three people yesterday on suspicion of spying for Russia. The two men and a woman are aged between 35 and 46.

  • The Head of the UK’s Counter Terrorism Command said that the UK was seeing an increasing number of proxies who were being recruited by foreign spy agencies.

Domestic politics: It is being reported that the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, is seeing whether a private prosecution can be brought against two men who were accused last year of spying for China. The case against the men – one of whom was a parliamentary researcher – was dropped earlier this week, after the Crown Prosecution Service said it would not offer evidence against them.
